Are the exchange rates live?

Yes. The primary source is FMP (paid plan) for real-time bid/ask. If FMP is unavailable, the converter falls back to Frankfurter, which serves European Central Bank reference rates updated daily. The interface clearly labels whether each conversion is live, cached or fallback so you always know the data quality.

Which currencies are supported?

20+ major fiat currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD, CNY, INR, BRL, MXN, KRW, SEK, NOK, DKK, PLN, CZK, HUF, TRY and ZAR. The converter is for fiat only — for crypto check the dollar-to-crypto calculator.

Is the data cached for offline use?

Yes. Each successful conversion is saved in localStorage for up to 30 minutes. If the API is unreachable on a return visit you'll see the cached rate with an explicit warning showing how old the data is, plus a retry button. Nothing is uploaded — the cache stays in your browser.

Why might my bank quote a different rate?

Reference rates show interbank or central-bank mid-market prices. Banks and brokers add a spread (often 1–4%) plus fixed fees, which is how they make money on currency conversion. The rates here are useful for benchmarking what you should be paying — anything significantly worse means your provider is overcharging you.

Do I need to account for fees separately?

Yes. Card transactions abroad add a foreign-transaction fee (1-3%); wire transfers add a flat fee. Both sit on top of any FX spread.
