Educational tool. Not financial advice. Past returns don't predict future returns; doesn't model fees, taxes, currency effects, or rebalancing costs that erode realized ROI.

How to calculate portfolio ROI

  1. Enter each holding with its purchase cost and current market value.
  2. The tool aggregates total cost basis and current value, producing a dollar return and percentage return.
  3. Annualise the return using the holding period — a 20% return over 2 years is only 9.5% annualised.
  4. Compare against a benchmark (S&P 500, world index) to see whether your portfolio is beating the market or lagging.

Common use cases

  • Running an annual portfolio review to see dollar-weighted and time-weighted returns.
  • Deciding whether an actively managed fund is actually outperforming a cheap index net of fees.
  • Evaluating whether crypto or alternative allocations have added diversification benefit or only volatility.
  • Benchmarking your portfolio against peer portfolios with similar risk profiles.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use time-weighted or dollar-weighted return?

Time-weighted isolates the investment manager's skill by removing the effect of your cash-flow timing. Dollar-weighted reflects your actual experience. Fund marketing uses time-weighted; personal ROI usually cares about dollar-weighted.

How do dividends factor in?

Total return assumes dividends are reinvested. Price return ignores them. For long-horizon comparison, total return is the comparable number — dividends can be 30-40% of long-run equity returns.

What is a good annualised return?

Developed-market equities have returned about 7% real (10% nominal) over very long periods. Beating that consistently is difficult — most active funds fail to over 10-20 year horizons.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run in your browser.
